!! Issue
If you get this message, many features of the program will not work or will display bizarre behaviour. The message means that the iPod/iPhone hasn't got enough information from wifi signals to get an accurate location fix, so doesn't know where you are. As most functions of the program require current location, they will not work correctly. Unfortunately this is a drawback of having a model with no GPS.
!! Workarounds and troubleshooting for this issue
Future versions will attempt to detect this case and handle it better but meanwhile the only solution is to close the program, then try again somewhere else or to use the program on a model that has a GPS :-( If you continue to use the program after receiving this message, you will likely see strange behaviour and further error messages - these are all caused by location services not working at your current location.
!! Issue
Sometimes your post will appear at latitude 0, longitude 0, which is in the Atlantic somewhere - and you most likely aren't :-) This can sometimes happen if location services fails to establish the current location, or if there is a transient problem in obtaining the current location. In rare instances this can also occur on models which have a GPS.
!! Workarounds and troubleshooting for this issue
Future versions will attempt to detect this case and handle it better but meanwhile you should:
* Do not attempt to 'write about here' if the iPhone has given you the message 'unable to determine current location'. (See [[If you get the message 'Unable to determine current location']] for more information)
* Do a sanity check on the displayed map before 'writing about here'. Make sure it looks like it is roughly in the right area and that the accuracy displayed is sensible.

Sometimes your post will appear in a wildly incorrect location, even if the accuracy displayed looks sensible. For example, an entry posted in Vietnam can show on the map in Kansas! This happens because the wifi location databases the iPod and iPhone 1st gen models use to get location fixes are not reliable in some areas.

Tags are just keywords that will help people to find your entry. They are the words that will appear in //Tags near here// and //Popular tags//.
Think of the words that the place brings to your mind. Let's say you are in a restaurant and it is famous for its steak, the food is good and it's also good value. You might use these tags:
//restaurant food goodfood goodvalue steak//
Note that if you want to use a phrase like //good food// or //good value// as a tag, you need to ram the words together without spaces. Otherwise each word in the phrase will be treated as a tag on its own. So it's //goodfood// or //good_food// and not //good food//.
If you think of more tags you want to add to your entry after you've posted it, just tap edit and you can change the tags (or anything else including the title). You can also do this with other people's entries, if you think they could have used better or more tags. If your entry is rated the most helpful by other users over time, your tags will also be used.

The whole concept of Word on the Street is to share //your// local knowledge about places near you and get some back. This can't happen unless you participate. If you passively wait for others to provide information, and don't provide any yourself, then it will never happen.
Also, the more local entries you write, the more attractive the system will be to other users who use the program in your area. So they too are then more likely to write something that you find useful.
Even something as simple as writing an entry when you're at the supermarket may be helpful to the next person in the area.

The preferred platform for wots is iPhone 3G or later, as other models do not have a GPS. They do have location services based on wifi. However, these location services are sometimes unreliable which can lead to problems when using wots.
To check if wots is likely to work for you on your iPod touch or 1st gen iPhone, make sure you are connected to a reliable Internet connection, then try opening the standard Maps program in your current location and/or other locations you normally visit. If Maps does not work for you, then neither will wots or any location based program.
